"Unethical for Mortician to Serve as Coroner"
The South Carolina Attorney General's office has ruled that it is unethical for a practicing mortician to hold office as coroner. While the ruling is in place, it doesn't appear that it is being enforced. The race for Coroner in Chesterfield County includes a candidate that is a "practicing mortician", so the race in and of itself could provide a testing of the ruling, assuming there is any reaction from the Attorney General's office. A state by state summary of "conflicts of interest in US Coroner Systems" can be found at www.FuneralEthics.org/summary.htm
